Marianne Borgen

Major of Oslo City

Mats Eklund

Professor in Environmental Technology and Management at Linköping University, Sweden and Director of Biogas Research Centre, a competence centre and innovation arena including eight research groups and 23 industrial and public parties.

Mats will set the scene for day two of NBC, explaining how biogas solutions could be framed as a multi-functional technology that supports many of the sustainable development challenges. How can biogas create a way out of poverty? How do industry become more competitive? How do cities become healthier places and what should the Nordic countries do?

Thina Margrethe Saltvedt

Senior Advisor Sustainable Finance at Nordea Bank, the largest banking group in the Nordic region. Before joining the Sustainable Finance group in January 2018, she worked as a chief analyst macro/oil for 10 years at Nordea Markets. 

Thina is a member of the Minister of Climate and Environment’s Climate Council. Before Nordea, she held a position with Norges Bank (central bank of Norway) within the Financial Stability area. Thina has a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) degree in Economics and a Master of Science (MSc) degree in International Business from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), United Kingdom.

Ms Saltvedt will give us an update on the global economics and market outlooks for renewable energy.

Jens Måge

Adviser at Avfall Norge

Jens Måge has worked with developing  circular economy and the market for biogas since 2006. He knows the industry and the challenges. He has experience from different roles as entrepreneur, adviser, project manager, finance, regulations and policy development. Jens is Head of the Organization and Program Committee for the Nordic Biogas Conference 2019, and will also be host and Master of Ceremonies for the conference.#NBC2019

Susanna Pflüger

Secretary General, EBA – European Biogas Association

Susanna Pflüger has worked as an energy advocate in Brussels since 2010. She joined EBA in 2012 as Policy Advisor and was appointed as Secretary General in 2016. She is responsible for various policy issues relevant to the European biogas industry and represents the EBA members vis-à-vis the European institutions. She holds a Master’s degree in European studies from the Ruhr-University of Bochum (DE) and Bachelor from the University of Helsinki (FI).

Erlend Haugsbø

COO Hyperthermics

Erlend Haugsbø has worked in various positions in the Norwegian oil and gas industry, including the shipbuilding industry for the last 25 years. The last 3 years he has worked with the biogas sector as COO, owner and board-member of Hyperthermics. He holds an Executive Master of Management from BI Norwegian Business School, Master of science from NTNU, Norwegian University of Science and Technology and Bachelor degrees in Ship Design. 

Jon Hovland

Chief Scientist at SINTEF Tel-Tek

Jon Hovland is Chief Scientist at SINTEF Tel-Tek in Porsgrunn, Norway. His background is in chemical engineering / applied biotechnology from NTH (now NTNU), and has worked on biogas processes since 1995. Previously to joining Tel-Tek in 2008 he worked with environmental technology at Norsk Hydro corporate research centre. His special interest has been to apply anaerobic technology while at the same time taking into account cost efficiency and environmental footprint. Hovland is work package leader for CO2 utilisation in the project Sustainable biogas lead by Greve biogas and supported by the EnergyX programme of the Norwegian Research Council. .

Alberto Confalonieri

Italian Composting And Biogas Association

Alberto Confalonieri (M.Sc. Biological Sciences) is an expert in biowaste recycling. Since 1999 he has worked for the main Italian waste technology providers and then, from 2006 to 2018, as a researcher in the integrated waste management sector. His job mainly focuses on regulatory and technical implications of composting and anaerobic digestion, biogas production and upgrading to biomethane. Since 2014, he is a senior staff member of the Italian Composting and Biogas Association and chair of its Technical Committee; he takes part to several working groups of the European Compost Network.

Philip Fjeld

CNG Fuels Ltd

Philip Fjeld is the Co-founder and CEO of CNG Fuels. CNG Fuels is a UK company that is developing a nationwide network of Bio-CNG refuelling stations that are predominantly used by heavy goods vehicles. 100% of the fuel dispensed at CNG Fuels' Bio-CNG stations is biomethane that has been sourced from a waste feedstock

Jean-Marc Leroy

Engie

Jean-Marc Leroy has been Senior Executive Vice-President for External Relations since 13 April 2018. His role is to promote at the international level a global smart energy system underpinned by a sustainable and well-balanced energy mix.Prior to that appointment, Jean-Marc Leroy was Managing Director for Gas Chain at ENGIE. Between January 2009 and July 2015, he was Chief Executive Officer of Storengy, the underground gas storage operator of ENGIE. 

Maria Malmkvist

Swedish Gas Association

Maria Malmkvist has a MSc degree from the Institute of Technology at Linköping University. In February 2016 she became the CEO of the Swedish Gas Association. She has experience from consultancy work at WSP and she was the head of unit Energy efficiency and the deputy department head at the Swedish Energy Agency for several years

David Newmann

World Biogas Association

David Newman lived in Europe and the Middle East until 2014 when he returned to the UK. He was the Executive Director of Greenpeace Italy 1994-1997; from 1999 until 2014 he led the Italian composting and biogas association CIC and he led the Italian Bioplastics Association from 2011 to 2015. During this time (2012-13) he was personal advisor to the Italian Minister of Environment, Andrea Orlando. From 2012 to 2016 he was President of the International Solid Waste Association in Vienna and initiated the 2015 Global Waste Management Outlook report written by ISWA and UNEP. He founded and leads the Bio Based and Biodegradable Industries Association UK since 2015 which works to promote the bioeconomy in the UK. He is also President of the World Biogas Association since November 2016, co-author of the report Global Food Waste Management, an Implementation Guide for Cities, published in May 2018 by the WBA with C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group.

Stefanie Siebert

 Executive Director of the European Compost Network ECN e.V

Stefanie Siebert is Executive Director of the European Compost Network ECN e.V. and responsible for the management of ECN and for developing and implementing the ECN strategy and policies. She coordinates the ECN’s representation and lobbying activities. As ECN’s Quality Manager she is responsible for managing the ECN-Quality Assurance Scheme and author of the ECNs Quality Assurance Handbook. Stefanie is soil scientist and has a PhD degree in natural science. Since 2000 she is working in the biological waste management sector. She was technical officer of the German Humus and Substrate Industry (VHE), Quality manager and European policy adviser of the German Quality Assurance Organisation (BGK).

Jani Hautaluoma

Director, Process Automation at Valmet Automation Inc

One of his main focus areas is developing the liquefied natural gas (LNG) and biogas applications. He has worked in several positions LNG industry positions. He has been heading the liquefaction plant operations, and developed operations philosophies for LNG terminals to minimize OPEX, based on high level automation with remote operations.

Jonas has worked in Energy trading and sales for more than 10 years. Currently he is heading the sales efforts for renewable gasses from Europes biggest Biomethane producer, Nature Energy.

Francesco Di Bari

As an entrepreneurial international professional and corporate executive, Francesco has 24 years of experience in finance, business development, M&A and change management. Prior to starting with Electrochaea, Francesco helped startups raising capital and building their operation in the space of robotics, artificial intelligence and software. Francesco worked as CFO, Managing Director, Head of M&A and COO in multinational companies such as Daimler-Benz, Deutsche Telekom, Infineon Technologies, SYMG and Solera Inc. building up and establishing businesses in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Francesco holds a Dottore in Economia Aziendale degree from the Università Commerciale L. Bocconi Milan, and a CEMS Master from the Wirtschaftsuniversität in Vienna.

Caroline Steinwig

Caroline Steinwig has worked as Technical Adviser Biological Treatment at the Swedish Waste Management and Recycling Association (Avfall Sverige) since 2014. Previous to that Caroline has worked with business development projects focusing on biomethane development including injection of biomethane into gas grids and as an environmental consultant with focus on biogas/biomethane. At NBC Caroline will give an insight to the Swedish success story of using digestate in organic farming.

Florian Strippel

German Biogas Association

Florian Strippel started to work for the German Biogas Association for the Department of Waste, Fertilisation, and Hygiene in 2016. From 2016 till 2017 he was responsible for legal questions around the operation of biogas plants based on biowaste and the general support of members of the German Biogas Association. Since the end of 2017 his tasks carried out have expanded and he is responsible for the German Biogas Service GmbH which provide plant operators detailed individual advice and organize various events about relevant biogas based topics.

Henrik Møller

Senior researcher and head of Anaerobic Digestion Technology, Aarhus University. Henrik Møller has more than 25 years experience with biogas research and development and is heading the biogas reasearch at Aarhus University.

Joshua Cabell

Nibio

Joshua Cabell is a researcher in the Department of Bioresources and Recycling Technologies at the Norwegian Institute for Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO). He has a background in agroecology and applies this systems approach to his work in researching solutions for converting organic waste from agriculture and aquaculture sectors to energy, fertilizer and feed. He has also worked on a practical level with operating farm-based biogas and composting facilities at one of NIBIO’s research stations.

Björn H. Halldórsson

Björn has been working for SORPA since January 2001, first as Chief Engineer but from 2007 as CEO. SORPA is a municipality owned, non-for-profit waste management company in the Capital Area of Reykjavík, servicing around 60% of Iceland’s inhabitants. SORPA runs diverse operations; recycling centres, drop-off centres, used household goods shop run for charity, receiving station servicing public and private entities and the biggest landfill in Iceland at Álfsnes. Björn has overseen the landfill gas extraction and upgrading project since 2001 - from a piloting project to a full-blown vehicle fuel project running 24/7. SORPA is currently building the first Anaerobic facility in Iceland. Björn’s background is civil engineering from University of Iceland and environmental/civil engineer from Chalmers Technical University, Sweden

Anna Virolainen-Hynnä

Anna Virolainen-Hynnä works as the executive director at the Finnish Biogas Association. Anna holds holds a Master of Science degree in Agriculture and Forestry. She has been working with the topics of circular economy and bio economy for several years both in Helsinki and Brussels.

Martina Conton

EU Policy Manager at NGVA Europe

Martina Conton is the EU Policy Manager at NGVA Europe where she is engaged in the legislative developments for CNG and LNG for Light Duty and Heavy Duty mobility, including the use of renewable gas in transport. Prior to her work in NGVA Europe, she was active in the promotion of the role of renewable gases within the European Biogas Association. Martina gained her relevant insight on EU energy policies while working for different industry representations and European institutions in Brussels, including the European Commission, providing support to the negotiation of the EU climate policies in transport.

Thomas Sakshaug

Thomas has for the last two years worked with controlling and finance aspects of building and operating the world's largest liquid biogas plant at Skogn outside Trondheim, and building the market for the product at the same time. Biokraft is supplying a renewable fuel alternative for heavy transport vehicles right now.

Arne Jakobsen is General Manager for the Biogas Liquefaction group in Wärtsilä Gas Solutions. He has worked with biogas liquefaction technologies and market development for the last 10 years. Before joining Wärtsilä in 2007, he worked as Researcher at SINTEF Refrigeration for in Trondheim Norway for 12 years, developing systems with natural refrigerants for various applications in car industry, heat pumps, fishery, diary and super-markets. He holds a PhD within refrigeration.

Henrik Wenzel

Professor University of Southern Denmark

Henrik Wenzel is professor in Life Cycle Engineering and head of SDU Life Cycle Engineering at University of Southern Denmark. His research focus on technical systems including energy systems and with a high focus on bioenergy, especially biogas. In his talk, he will touch upon the role of biogas in the future renewable energy system. He will address the bio-methane pathway for supplying the transport sector with fuels, balancing fluctuating power supply, integrating hydrogen, making use of process heat for district heating purposes and for achieving the best possible synergy with agriculture.

Tommy Johnsen has held the position as the Head of the Norwegian NOx Fund for the last six years.Before this he was Technical Director for several years in a firm (now part of Yara) supplying emission treatment systems to ships. He has also spent many years in DNVGL with focus on environmental consultancy, with special emphasis on air pollution from maritime activities. Tommy Johnsen holds a M.Sc. in Mechanical and Process Engineering from the Norwegian University for Technology and Science in Trondheim in 1995.

John Cosmo Dwelle is working with the legal and politics department of Landwärme GmbH, based in Munich, Germany. Landwärme is a supplier for biomethane in Europe. In addition to biomethane trading, the company plans and operates biogas upgrading plants and offers services along the entire biomethane value chain. Prior to Landwärme J. Cosmo Dwelle worked with Peters, Schönberger & Partner and Siemens France SAS. He holds a Legum Baccalaureus and a Master’s degree in Sustainable Resource Management from the Technical University Munich.


Linus Klackenberg

Swedish Gas Association

Linus Klackenberg is production co-ordinator at the Swedish Gas Association. He is responsible for biogas issues and is very engaged in biogas policy. Linus has M.Sc. in Aquatic and Environmental Engineering and long experience of renewables, sustainability and policy at IVL Swedish Environmental Institute, Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Government Offices. At NBC Linus will tell about the growing interest for biogas in industry in Sweden, good examples and challenges yet to be solved.
